At MIPT, virus and tumor identifier may become part of smartphone

Scientists at Moscow’s Phystech (MIPT), a leading technology university, have developed an ultra-sensitive nanomechanical sensor to analyze chemical composition in a substance, Lenta.ru  reported . 

Dmitry Fedyanin and Yuri Stebunov are said to have come up with a device that can pinpoint markers of viral diseases such as HIV, hepatitis and herpes. The innovation is also believed to be able to identify oncology markers; the developers claim using the device may help diagnose the formation and growth of a malignant tumor at earlier stages than with methods that exist today. 

Unlike similar devices, the MIPT sensor is easy to make and could be used outside labs, the project owners said. 

The concept of the invention was  first described  in Russian on the MIPT website in June. Now the developers seek to make the solution truly minuscule to facilitate its integration into pocket mobile gadgets such as smartphones.
