Rostec, Russia’s largest government-owned umbrella corporation for technology development, is developing new 2-5µm infrared quantum-cascade type semiconductor lasers. The solution is expected to help fight cancers through targeted destruction of cells in malignant tumors.

The new lasers may have much broader applications, the developers believe. They could be used for optical and space communications, high-resolution molecular spectroscopy, and in highly sensitive spectral gas analysis.

“We are currently working on the fundamental part of the effort, and are also thinking of what applied direction to prioritize from the potential demand viewpoint,” Rostec CEO Igor Kozlov said.

When the new lasers may materialize and hit the market has yet to be announced.
