Researchers in Tomsk developed a new medicine to regulate blood pressure

The scientists at the Siberian State Medical University (SSMU) in Tomsk have developed a long-acting drug that regulates the blood pressure. The medicine does not require frequent administration and acts only when the blood pressure is really high.

“In the last 30-40 years, R&D were focused primarily on combination drugs with well-known mechanisms of action. They are not for all patients, and some forms of hypertension disease are not amenable to correction at all. We use an absolutely new mechanism of action; so, there is no analog to the developed drug,” said Svetlana Gusakova, the Head of Biophysics and Functional Diagnosis Department of SSMU.

The active substance of the medicine developed in Tomsk is the precursor of the stable analog for platelet-activating factor, which can be activated in the kidney and cannot be activated in the vascular endothelium. The drug is able to stabilize the blood pressure for a long time. Moreover, if the vitals are normal, the blood pressure will not drop.

The benefits of the new medication also include its low toxicity and, consequently, the safety. According to Svetlana Gusakova, there are reasons to believe that the drug will be effective in the cases of hypertension disease not amenable to correction.

The market launch of the medicine is expected in three to four years after the start of clinical trials. According to developers, its price will not exceed the prices of existing hypertension drugs.
