Russia’s Pharma Market Grew by 1,7% in Q1 2019

The Russian pharmaceutical market continues to see growth. Over the first three months of this year, it grew by 1.7% in ruble terms and reached 255.2 billion rubles, stated DSM Group in its analytical report published in March 2019.

Pharmaceutical market size in March 2019 reached 86.9 billion rubles (in retail prices). Compared to February, it increased by 3.6%, although in comparison with March 2018, sales dropped by 5%. The average cost of a drug package increased by 1.3% compared with February, and reached 199.4 rubles.

The structure of the drug market by price segments changed in favor of high-priced drugs compared to the same period in 2018. The share of the group of drugs worth up to 50 rubles, decreased by 0.3% compared to March 2018 to 4.3%. The share of the drug segment with an average cost of 50-150 rubles amounted to 10.6% (-1.1%). The share of a group of drugs with a price range of 150-500 rubles decreased from 44.6% in March 2018 to 41.8% in March 2019. The share of expensive drugs was 43.3%, which is 4.2% higher than last year.

By the end of March 2019, 59.1% of the drugs sold on the market were locally produced (in physical terms), however, because of their low prices relative to imported drugs, its share in value terms reached 29.7%.

The market in value terms in March 2019 was practically divided in half: share of prescription drugs reached 35.2%, 64.8% were occupied by non-prescription drugs in packs.

Bayer, in second place – Novartis, and Sanofi in third, headed the rating of companies by value of sales in March 2019. The TOP-3 brands of pharmaceutical products in Russia by value in pharmacy sales in March 2019 consisted of Xarelto (0.8%), Mexidol (0.7%) and Kagocel (0.7%).

The volume of the Russian pharmacy dietary supplement market in value terms in March 2019 grew by 4.9% compared to February and amounted to 4.9 billion rubles. In real terms, the volume of the pharmacy market of dietary supplements in March increased by 1.8% compared with the previous month, and amounted to 25.3 million packages. The weighted average price of a dietary supplement package in March 2019 compared with February increased by 3.0% and amounted to 191.5 rubles. TOP-3 manufacturers of dietary supplements occupied 29.9% of the market in March in terms of value; Evalar (18.9%), Solgar Vitamin And Herb (5.9%), and Pharma-Med (5.1%) headed the list of companies with the largest market share.
