The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has published a iconrevision of its guideline on the environmental risk assessment (ERA) of human medicines for a six-month public consultation. The presence of biologically-active pharmaceuticals in the environment is a growing concern, because some of these substances have shown direct effects on wildlife at or below the concentrations found in water and soil.

Belgium, Denmark, Finland and Latvia were included into the mutual recognition agreement between the European Union and the United States on 16 November and Estonia on 28 November 2018. The agreement mutually recognises inspections of manufacturing sites for human medicines conducted in the different territories and as of today, the FDA will rely on a total of 20 Member States whose inspection results can replace their own inspections.

Scientists created a temperature-stable polio vaccine

Researchers from The Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California (USA) have developed a polio vaccine that doesn’t require refrigeration. The vaccine, which was freeze-dried into a powder, kept at room temperature for four weeks and then rehydrated, offered full protection against the polio virus when tested in mice. The study itself appeared appears in the journal mBio.
