Japanese firms open rehab center in Russia

Japanese firms have opened a physical rehabilitation center in Vladivostok in Russia's Far East as part of the plan for economic cooperation between the 2 countries.

JGC, an engineering firm, and Hokkaido-based Hokuto Social Medical Corporation, invested in setting up the rehabilitation center. JGC has experience in building hospitals.

The opening ceremony was held on Wednesday and attended by Russian and Japanese government officials as well as executives of both companies.

In Russia, rehabilitation facilities for easing post-surgery pain are available but those for recovering physical abilities are said to be in short supply.

The new center will provide Japanese-style rehabilitation, under the guidance of Japanese therapists, for patients suffering the aftereffects of stroke and those using artificial joints.

JGC Chairman Masayuki Sato says he hopes the facility will not just help promote health and medical services in Russia but become a bridge for Japan-Russia ties.

Medical robots and other advanced medical technologies from Japan drew attention from visitors at the center.

The medical sector is included in a bilateral, 8-point economic cooperation plan. Japan's economy and industry ministry provided support, including a feasibility study, for the project.

Japanese and Russian officials hope the opening of the rehabilitation center will promote Japanese medical services' businesses in Russia.
