In a joint Russo-Belarusian effort, scientists from Siberia’s Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) and the Minsk-based Belarusian State University are working on new radiation-resistant nanostructured coatings to protect spacecraft from radiation, TPU announced, citing Alexei Yakovlev, the director of the Siberian university’s Institute of High Technology Physics.
According to the scientist, new nanostructured and nanocomposite materials may also be used in the nuclear energy and some other sectors.

“We’re developing technology that enables us to vary given properties in the same materials we use,” Mr. Yakovlev said.

Research is currently limited to thin coatings to obtain faster scientific results, he explained. When this stage of research is over, the developers want to create a large experimental unit to apply coatings to materials designed for operation in extreme conditions.
