Jeffrey Whitman, M.D., Will Be the First Dallas Eye Doctor to Implant Commercial Raindrop® Near Vision Inlays in U.S.

Following extensive clinical trials, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the Raindrop Near Vision Inlay, a tiny, clear, implantable medical device, to improve near vision in some patients with presbyopia. FDA approval was granted June 29, 2016.

According to Dr. Whitman, who performed more of the Raindrop procedures than any other surgeon in the U.S. during the clinical trials, “The best candidates for the Raindrop inlay are people who are not dependent on glasses or contact lenses for distance vision but need vision correction to read close up. For example, if you’re in your 40s or 50s, and have become increasingly dependent on readers, Raindrop may be a good option for you.”

As lead author of the landmark paper, Treatment of Presbyopia in Emmetropes Using a Shape-Changing Corneal Inlay, Dr. Whitman and the team of investigators were impressed by the improvements patients realized to both near and intermediary vision following the Raindrop procedure.

On average, patients experienced five lines of improved near vision post-surgery, as well as two to three lines of improvement to their intermediary vision. In addition, negligible distance vision was lost.

“Since the clear implant is the size of a pinhead and only placed in the non-dominant eye, patients experienced very little change to contrast sensitivity, maintained the binocularity of their distance vision, and very few adverse effects were reported,” Dr. Whitman said.

Because Dr. Slade was one of the first investigators in the Raindrop study, and Dr. Whitman performed the largest number of procedures during the clinical trials, ReVision Optics, the company that developed and manufactures the Raindrop Near Vision Inlay, asked them to do the first commercial post-FDA approval surgeries in the U.S.

The two Texas eye surgeons will each perform the Raindrop procedure on two or three patients. The procedures, as well as real-time Q&A and surgical pearls from Drs. Whitman and Slade, will be broadcast live, August 30, at 10 a.m. Central Time on EyeTube.net.
